By Jack Harvey  Wednesday Jun 7, 2017

A group of volunteers and community groups have launched a fundraising bid to reclaim the M32 underpass which has fallen into disrepair and been plagued by pollution and litter.

LitterARTI, a not-for-profit organisation, is one of the driving forces behind the campaign to clean up the area that has recently been taken over by skateboarders and says their presence has led to a significant decrease in the amount of prostitution and drug use in the area.

However, there is still a big litter problem and the skate park, which is the only cost-free example of its type in Bristol, is far from an ideal recreational ground for young children.

A clear plan has been set out, with aspects such as the wooden skateboard ramps, lighting and seating topping the list of things to be improved or replaced.

People of all ages are getting involved in the bid to reclaim the M32 underpass for the community.

The river also requires a large amount of attention as a lot of litter has been piled into it, creating both and unpleasant image and atmosphere.

The group is crowdfunding as part of the Better Bristol campaign and has set a £8000 target, which they believe will be enough to fund all the necessary improvements to the urban space.

Their bid is supported by a number of groups, including the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft, Bristol Waste Company and Bristol City Council.

Volunteers are working to clean up the once derelict site.

One element of the project is to try and create as many green, eco-friendly solutions to the underpass’s problems as possible. Hedges, trees and gardens have all been added to the plan, which will absorb pollution create by the ever busy road above, but will also create a more natural physical environment for those using the area.

If the project is successful in raising the money it needs, it promises to create a much better social environment for the public to be in and around.
