Protesters call for safer streets for cyclists and pedestrians
Dozens of protesters gathered in Bedminster to demand safe streets across Bristol and the rest of the UK.
Standing on the pavement next to the roundabout between North Street and Cannon Street, there were speeches from people including protest organiser Alice Ferguson and Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer.
There was also a minute’s silence in memory of all who have had their lives cut short by road violence.
is needed now More than ever
The peaceful demonstration was part of a national call for safer streets from campaign group Safe Streets Now.
“Our main ask is for national government to take the issue seriously, to bring in legislation and policy to reduce road danger, and to ensure local authorities and police are resourced to also do their part in this,” said Ferguson, the co-founder of Playing Out.
Protesters were demanding peace from the threat of antisocial driving; space to walk, cycle and play without fear; and justice for the victims of road violence.
