Public art project could transform east Bristol high street
A busy road in east Bristol could be transformed in a major public art project.
Eastside Community Trust and Studio Meraki are looking for established artists in Bristol to design and paint three major artworks on Stapleton Road.
Running through Lawrence Hill and Easton, Stapleton Road has been the point of contention in recent years, having been tarred in the national media in the past.
is needed now More than ever
The local community has worked hard to change this reputation, organising vibrant murals, street picnics and community celebrations.

In 2020, three vibrant new artworks were unveiled at the gateway to Stapleton Road railway station, and in 2021, a neglected patch of land below the railway line was transformed as vibrant murals covered the supporting pillars below.
Artists Silent Hobo, Peace of Art, Graft, Anna Higgie, Dave Bain and Zoe Power worked on the project.
Now, it is hoped this latest project will encourage footfall, pride of place and extend dwell time on the road.
Artists will work alongside Studio Meraki to ensure the local community has a voice and are able to participate in the design process of the final work so that it is embedded in and reflects the local people and place.
The project will run alongside a graffiti shutter uplift project and other street improvements, as part of the City Centre and High Streets Recovery and Renewal programme.
The programme is funded by Bristol City Council and the West of England Combined Authority’s Love our High Streets project.
The exact locations of the artworks are yet to be confirmed, however it is hoped the works will be scalable so they could also be digitised and industrially fabricated.
Individual artists, collectives and arts organisations are invited to apply for one or all three commissions.
The deadline to apply for an expression of interest is May 15. More information can be found here.
