What does the red weather warning mean for Bristol?
A red weather alert – meaning that there is a risk to life – has been issued in South West England and south Wales, as Storm Emma approaches.
In the latest developments:
- Schools across Bristol have closed and will continue to shut on Friday
- Flights are cancelled at Bristol Airport
- Hospitals have emergency block-booked hotel rooms for their staff
- St Nick’s Night Market on Friday has been postponed
- Bristol’s two universities have both closed all buildings across their campuses
- Cabot Tower is closed until Monday
- Bristol Zoo is closed
- St George’s have cancelled concerts on Thursday and Friday
- Clifton Suspension Bridge visitor centre is closed
- Hengrove Play Park is closed until Sunday
Storm Emma is due to meet the ‘Beast from the East’ weather front, and Bristol is only a few miles away from the middle of the collision.
The red weather warning will come into force from 3pm on Thursday, with the city centre within the amber warning area.
It is the first time that such a high alert has been issued in the South West, with strong winds and blizzards forecast to bring more disruption.
