Redcliffe Bridge fully closed to public
Redcliffe Bridge fully closed to the public on Tuesday, September 20.
The 80-year old bridge that connects Redcliffe to Welsh Back and Queen Square had previously been closed to traffic since August this year.
However since Tuesday, the bridge has been closed to all users, including pedestrians and cyclists.
is needed now More than ever
The bridge will be closed for eight to ten weeks, so that its bascule span can be lifted into the upright position.
The council says this will enable engineers to repair and upgrade the mechanical and electrical systems that allow the bridge to open for larger boats.
Traffic will therefore need to continue to use the official diversion route over Bristol Bridge throughout the closure, whilst cyclists and pedestrians will need to follow the diversion once more across Bristol Bridge.
Cyclists and pedestrians can also cross Prince Street Bridge and Commercial Road Swing Bridge, between the Louisiana and the Ostrich Pub, as an alternative route.
The work is projected to be complete in November, when the bridge will reopen to all road users under lane restrictions. However some people have taken to Twitter to complain about the slow progress of the bridge works, with one user writing “Been closed since August… Can you finish one set of roadworks before starting another?”
However another user has suggested that the closure could “ease some of the pollution generating traffic queues created in the centre.”
Repairs to the Redcliffe Bridge began in January 2021, and the timing of it’s full closure to traffic, pedestrians and cyclists coincides with the closure of nearby Gaol Ferry Bridge.
