Redcliffe Wharf development ‘coming soon’

By Martin Booth  Monday Oct 18, 2021

One of the last undeveloped sites overlooking the Floating Harbour appears to be a step closer to becoming a reality.

Signs have been put up on Redcliffe Way saying that Redcliffe Wharf is now “coming soon”.

The mixed-use development across six buildings promises to be “an important milestone in the evolution of the wider Bristol harbourside” and will include offices, shops, cafes and restaurants, workshop and studio accommodation, and 45 residential units.

The site has been vacant for 30 years with three derelict buildings dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries.

Permission to transform the derelict land was granted by Bristol City Council in 2017.

One of the office spaces has been lined up to be the new South West headquarters for Arup, with 37 two- and three-bedroom flats, two restaurants overlooking the docks and space for independent businesses.

Bump roller disco is currently using the site, with a film set for new Channel 4 drama The Undeclared War using the land earlier this year.

Historic boat building premises will be demolished but two other buildings on the site refurbished, with the area also seeing new boat moorings, and a pedestrian and cycle link to the nearby Quaker Burial Ground.

Back in 2017, councillors raised concerns about the lack of affordable housing in the scheme but developers CDP said that three affordable homes was the maximum amount they could include in order to make the development profitable.

They say that the new development at Redcliffe Wharf will create “an attractive, sustainable and vibrant place to live, work and relax”.
