Rees leads trade delegation to USA

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Jun 4, 2019

Marvin Rees is leading a trade delegation from Bristol hoping to drum up business for the city on the east coast of the USA.

The Bristol mayor’s International Strategy group left the UK on Sunday and will be spending time in Boston (pictured above), Chicago and New York.

Alongside Rees and West of England metro mayor Tim Bowles are representatives from organisations including Business West, Invest Bristol & Bath, the University of Bristol and Destination Bristol.

Companies from the tech and innovation sectors are also joining in an effort to strengthen trade and investment links to the region

Rees said that “in a highly competitive global market we need to work harder to make and sustain new trade links so businesses in the city can continue to grow”.

He said: “Bristol has many assets it should be proud of including a diverse and talented workforce, a thriving and growing economy, and a rich cultural offer.

“We should be competing with other cities on an international stage showcasing what Bristol has to offer to those who are looking for trade and investment opportunities.”

University of Bristol pro vice-chancellor, Dr Erik Lithander, said that the university’s new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus “is an incredible opportunity to attract new investors and entrepreneurs to Bristol”.

He added: “There is a real opportunity to harness our global network of alumni and friends, many of which are based in the US and looking for opportunities to become involved in the business ecosystem in Bristol.”
