Historic gateway to Ashton Court to be saved

By Pamela Parkes  Tuesday Feb 3, 2015

The derelict Lower Lodge of the Ashton Court estate has been saved.

Currently wrapped in protective sheeting by the side of the A370, the lodge was the original town gate entry to the estate. Used by carriages, its route gave visitors the best view of the approach to the mansion, but it has gradually fallen into disrepair.

Anthony Negus, chair of Bristol Buildings Preservation Trust said he was “delighted that after many years the hard work of everyone involved has paid off” and that there was now had a “viable plan for the sustainable future of this important and charming building”.

He added that securing funding for the restoration of the building has been challenging and money has come from the trust itself and grants obtained from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Architectural Heritage Fund and other trusts.

Construction work is due to start in a few months with completion scheduled for early summer 2016.

Once building work is completed it will be used by neighbouring Ashton Park School as a community hub and learning gateway.
