A road was partly closed by police on Tuesday morning after reports someone tried to cut down a lamppost.

Police say a witness reported someone attempting to cut down the post on Salcombe Road in Knowle West at about 4.20am on Tuesday, before making off on an electric scooter.

Later on Tuesday morning, workmen were called to remove the post near the junction of Somerdale Avenue due to it being at risk of falling.

After removing the post’s lamp and CCTV camera, the workers removed the pole and wrapped the remainder in caution tape.

The road was closed to traffic from around 8.30am, with it reopening at around 10am after the work was completed. Buses were also diverted during this time.

Anyone with information about how the damage happened is asked to call 101 and give the reference 5223247094.
