Rogue landlord jailed after serving tenant with illegal eviction notice
A landlord has been sentenced to eight weeks in jail after threatening a tenant.
Bristol City Council’s housing team brought a case against Kevin De Cararet after discovering he handed the tenant an illegal eviction notice after she asked him to give notice before visiting the property in future after finding him using her bathroom.
The tenant stayed in the property with her dog while she tried to find a new home.

During this time, De Carteret threatened to remove the fridge, cancelled the cleaner who worked on communal areas and changed house rules so pets were no longer allowed.
“This kind of behaviour is deplorable, and I was glad to see a strict sentence handed out in court,” said Tom Renhard, cabinet member for housing delivery and homes and Labour councillor for Horfield.
“Having a safe and secure roof over our heads is key to ensuring we all have the best possible opportunity to live a happy and healthy life and that is why we continue to do all we can to protect people in the private rented sector.”
“We want to make sure that people renting properties across the city can feel confident that their home will be safe and secure, with clear standards for what this looks like and routes to raise concerns where property conditions and their management are falling short.”
The housing crisis in Bristol has proven to be an extreme issue, with people having to leave due to the high rental costs.
In Bristol since 2013, private rents have increased by 52 per cent while wages have only risen by 24 per cent.
On average, residents now need almost nine times their annual salary to buy a house.
