Sajid Javid to quit as MP at next election

By Betty Woolerton  Friday Dec 2, 2022

Sajid Javid has announced he will not stand as an MP at the next general election.

The MP for the Worcestershire seat of Bromsgrove said he had “wrestled” with the decision of whether to stand down “for some time”.

Javid, who has served as chancellor, home secretary, and health secretary, spent much of his formative years in Bristol.

He attended Downend School and Filton Technical College after moving to Stapleton Road in Easton when he was four. There, he lived in a two-bedroom flat above a ladieswear shop that his parents took over before studying economics and politics at the University of Exeter.

The son of a Pakistani-born bus driver who arrived in the UK in 1961, Javid has represented Bromsgrove in the midlands since 2010.

He previously served as home secretary under former Prime Minister Theresa May, and in 2019 was promoted to chancellor by Boris Johnson but resigned six months into the role.

Javid said being an MP and serving government has been “the privilege” of his life.

Confirming his decision in a letter to the area’s Conservative association, he wrote his decision had been spurred on by a Tory Party review, which is asking sitting MPs to confirm if they want to stand again with a deadline of Monday.

“It has been a decision I have wrestled with for some time, but I have ultimately concluded not to stand again for what would be my fifth election,” he explained.

“I am very proud of what we have achieved for Bromsgrove District and of my work in Parliament and Government.

“This decision will not mark the end of my Parliamentary activity, particularly for the causes I care deeply about. Nor will it impact my duties as a local MP on behalf of constituents across Bromsgrove.

“Being the local MP and serving in Government has been the privilege of my life and I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to serve.

“I always sought to make decisions in the national interest, and in line with my values, and I can only hope my best was sufficient.”
