September date for Southville parking zone

By Louis Emanuel  Wednesday Jul 22, 2015

Southville will be the next area to have a residents parking zone (RPZ) installed.

Permit parking bays along all streets from North Street to Coronation Road are expected to be launched by the end of September.

The area is the 10th RPZ of 12 being rolled out as part of mayor George Ferguson’s flagship policy designed to reduce congestion.

The scheme has caused widespread controversy and promted protests in Clifton, where a tank was driven through the village, and Montpelier and St Paul’s, where parking meters were vandalised and streets barricaded.

The standard charge for a permit for one vehicle is £48 a year, although costs vary from £0-£72 depending on the emissions band.

A second vehicle permist costs £96, while a third costs £192.

The operating hours of the Southville scheme will be Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm, except in North Street which will run Monday to Saturday from 9am-5pm.

There will be a number of three-hour pay & display parking bays near shops, businesses and other community facilities like schools, with the first 30 minutes free.

Residents will receive the standard allocation of 50 free visitor scratch-card permits per year and the option of buying up to another 50 for £1 each.

Details of how to apply will be delivered through the post in the coming weeks. Businesses based in the scheme area can apply for up to seven permits.

Residents and businesses were first consulted on the scheme in February 2014 and then invited to object to the details of the scheme in May and June this year.

Changes made after consultation include adding 10 disabled bays and the removal of double yellow lines in several streets, the city council said.

Bristol24/7 has requested full details of the consultation, including the number of objections, from the city council.

Read what happened when the council tried to install the same scheme in Montpelier.
