Severn tolls ‘one of world’s most expensive’
At around 3.2 miles long and charging cars £6.40 to cross, campaigners claim the Severn crossings are some of the most expensive toll roads in the world.
A 10p hike in the charges on New Year’s Day will take the cost of crossing into Wales up 10p to £6.50 for cars. Heavy good vehicles and buses will see charges rise 40p, from £19.20 to £19.60.
The Campaign Against Severn Tolls (CAST) said the increase will make it one of the most expensive stretches of toll roads per kilometre. It claims the cost of the crossings are stifling economic growth and putting off tourists.
is needed now More than ever
CAST said there is “no good reason” why bridges should be treated differently to the rest of the road network.
Bridge owners Severn River Crossing PLC said it increases the cost every January in line with the Retail Price Index and in “strict compliance with the Severn Bridges Act 1992”.
