The former barrister and MP for Holborn & St Pancrase had earlier tweeted that he was on his way to Bristol, “looking forward to campaigning… with our great @UKLabour candidates”.
But he only mentioned three out of Bristol’s four Labour candidates, omitting Bristol North West’s Darren Jones – who has the toughest fight of the quartet to hold his seat.
A Labour Party spokesperson said there was not enough time for Starmer to visit all four Bristol constituencies as he needed to get back to the capital.
Starmer’s visit came on the same a day as former Green Party leader Caroline Lucas was campaigning in Bristol West; and the day after chancellor of the exchequer, Sajid Javid, visited Easton – also within Thangam Debbonaire’s former constituency of Bristol West.
Javid has made a great deal of growing up in a flat above his parents’ clothes shop on Stapleton Road, but has been criticised by local residents for disparaging the area.
During his visit, he went into the shop – which now sells carpets – to meet the new owners and wish them luck.
“There was a lot in terms of material things we didn’t have, but that didn’t matter because there was so much in terms of human wealth here,” said the former Downend School pupil.
“It’s nice to be back. I popped into a shop I used to live above, and it’s nice to see another business has just moved in there and that the community is still thriving.”
