Shadow sports minister Debbonaire admits she has never been to a football match
Thangam Debbonaire, the newly appointed shadow secretary of state for digital, culture, media & sport, has revealed that she has never attended a football or rugby match.
“Do you know, I’ve never been to a football or a rugby match, but I know how much it matters to other people,” the Bristol West MP said in an interview on Politics Hub on Sky News with Sophy Ridge.
Debbonaire’s admission has sparked debate, with some people questioning her suitability for the role of shadow sports minister.

Others have defended her, saying that her lack of experience does not matter and her track record suggests she will be successful in the role.
She may not know much about sport, but Debbonaire has a long history of working in the arts and culture sector, being a professional cellist before becoming an MP.
Since being elected to parliament in 2015, she has held a number of shadow ministerial positions, including shadow minister for arts & heritage and shadow minister for exiting the EU, as well as being a Labour whip.
