Shirehampton Post Office blown up in ATM raid

By Bristol24/7  Tuesday Apr 26, 2016

Another post office has been all but destroyed by an explosion triggered by thieves attacking a cash machine.

The entire frontage of Shirehampton post office was left strewn across The Parade after an incident which is believed to have taken place at about 2am on Tuesday.

The attack follows a similar explosion at Long Ashton Post Office in January this year and also comes after 12 attacks on ATMs in the last year.

Police launched an appeal on Tuesday afternoon to trace two suspects who they believe stole “a quantity” of cash. One of the men is described as white, aged in his late 20s or early 30s, between 5ft 6ins and 5ft 9ins tall, of medium build and with short black hair.

The second was described as aged in his late 20s or early 30s, 5ft 6ins tall and of medium build.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Iddon said: “This was an extremely dangerous and reckless act which put lives at risk and we are treating it with the utmost seriousness.

“While the offenders in this instance have made off with money, the success rate for these attacks is actually very low.

“We have a team of detectives working on this case and will do everything we can to bring those responsible to justice.

“As part of our investigation we are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and thinks they may have seen something suspicious, or anyone with any other information about who committed these offences, to get in touch as they could get a reward.

“We in Avon and Somerset are committed to apprehending those involved in ATM attacks and have a significant arrest record relating to this type of offence. In recent months we have also seen a number of people jailed for attacks of this kind.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any information, is asked to call police on 101 quoting crime reference number 5216089216.
