Smartphones only for this year’s 24 Hours in Bristol competition
Thomas Boot was having a break in Small Street Espresso during last year’s 24 Hours in Bristol photography competition.
He had put his DSLR camera down and glanced at the table next to him, spotting two men engaged in conversation beautifully framed by the cafe’s window.
A few shots taken on his mobile phone and he had an image (pictured above) that went on to win third prize in the contest.
is needed now More than ever
Unlike previous years, 24 Hours in Bristol 2017 will only accept photographs taken on smartphones – an innovation that competition organisers hope will encourage more entrants from across the city.

“Our new inclusive Smartphone format will give all Bristolians the chance to record 24 hours in the life of this great city,” said 24 Hours in Our City managing director Mike Porter.
“Thousands of images of Bristol are taken every day, but remain trapped in people’s phones. We aim to set the creative heart of Bristol free.”
The fifth annual competition takes place from midday on Saturday, September 30 to midday on Sunday, October 1 with an exhibition of the winning and highly commended images to be held in early November.
Once again all entrants will be randomly allocated a specific hour of the 24-hour event in which they must take at least one entry photo.
A range of sponsorship opportunities for Bristol firms is available, including £300 to sponsor an hour of the competition and £1,000 to sponsor a prize category.
For entrants, there will be more than £6,000 of prizes on offer including an overall first prize of £2,000, one of the world’s largest prizes for a mobile photo competition.
