Snow in Bristol: will it or won’t it?

As the skies turn ominously grey and temperatures plummet, it’s time for every Brit’s favourite winter pastime of snow speculation.

Up in the north, they’re already being battered by severe weather and just down the road in Devon, there’s been a decent sprinkling of the white stuff – so, is it going to hit Bristol?

Well, it’s looking pretty likely.

The Met Office has issued warnings from Thursday afternoon, through to Friday night, predicting heavy snow and icy conditions, bringing likely travel delays, possible cancellations of public transport, potential power outage and risk rural communities may be cut off.

According to the forecaster: “A band of rain is expected to arrive from the south west in the afternoon, quickly turning to snow and becoming heavy at times. 3cm and 7cm of snow is likely to accumulate quickly – within two to three hours – with up to 10cm in some places.”

As of 11am on Thursday, the Met Office has issued an amber warning for snow and yellow for ice and fog. A yellow warning is in place for snow and ice for Friday.

Travelwest is advising people to check updates throughout the next two days for the latest on any travel disruption.

Bristol’s Severe Weather Emergency Provision (SWEP) for rough sleepers has been triggered, meaning an extra 69 beds are available for people facing a night on the streets, with agencies promising to create more if needed.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is calling on employers not to force staff into work in potentially dangerous conditions and urged businesses to issue advice for anyone affected by adverse weather.

While snow is a serious business for many, for others it’s the perfect excuse to wrap up warm, search for any flat-ish object that can be turned into a sledge and head to the hilliest park they can find.
