Social media flooded on Shaun opening day

By Josh Dyer  Tuesday Jul 7, 2015

Bristol’s Shaun the sheep trail has already reached millions of people after social media was flooded on the opening day.

Twitter and Instagram became Shaun obsessed after the official start to the trail on Monday July 6, with #shauninthecity trending in Bristol.

The hashtag was posted more than 500 times on the opening day, adding to 13,000 posts on Instagram since the start of a preview London trial in March.

Instagram #shauninthecity pictures have already received nearly 12,000 likes by fellow Shaun the sheep hunters.

The #shauninthecity hashtag, which allows all enthusiasts to come together and share images, reached a worldwide audience of 1.8 million individual users.

Official twitter account for the Shaun in the City trail, @shaun_inthecity, was overloaded during the opening of the trail, receiving over 1,000 mentions, adding to the thousands sent in the days leading up to the start.

Animals and humans alike came together to hunt for the sheep as families jumped at the opportunity to involve their pets

Well-known comedian Jonny Vegas was also said to be “gutted” that he was unable to get involved in painting of one of the sheep.

Aardman senior designer Gavin Strange also got involved with the large sheep quest. Shaun the Sheep hunters have until August 31 to find all 70 sheep, at which point they will be taken away and sold at an auction.

Shaun in the City is an exhibition around Bristol, aimed at raising money for the Grand Appeal. Two years ago Bristol witnessed a similar trail with Gromit Unleashed visting.
