South Bristol’s Berry Maze growing by the minute

By Jack Wilkinson  Monday Jun 19, 2017

In the few short weeks since the South Bristol project hit its crowdfunding target, Brixham Road’s Berry Maze has been taking shape at an astounding pace.

The project, which aims to regenerate a neglected tip, raised over £3800 from donations, and now things are looking even better for the future. The maze has been selected by Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme to compete against two other local projects for a share of £5000.

Whenever a customer buys anything from one of the selected stores, they receive a small token which they can use to vote for one of three projects. This will provide both exposure and valuable funds for the maze. If you’d like to vote for the maze, the official name is the Malago Greenway Project.

In addition to the potential financial boost that the Tesco initiative will provide, the project has received an in-kind donation from Stihl, comprised of tools, gloves and a first-aid kit.

As well as receiving support from large corporations, the community has been incredibly supportive of the plans. Several volunteer groups and the local schools have joined the project in a bid to make it happen – The Retired Gentlemen’s Woodworking Group will build wooden planters for the centre of the maze, while The Friends of Parson Street Railway Station have kindly donated a mosaic, designed by children from Parson Street School.

With volunteers queueing up to be involved in the project, and the first part of their funds secured, works on the maze are due to begin in early September.
