Southmead Hospital expansion continues
Construction of the new Southmead Hospital is continuing, with a new multi-storey car park being built as part of an extension.
New aerial images show the construction site spreading over the old hospital wards which have now been demolished.
The main Brunel building of the new hospital was completed in 2014 and opened in May of the same year.
As well as a new car park, the new extension, due to open next spring, will provide a community arts space, a cycling centre and more staff parking.
The new £430 million hospital was rocked by a string of complaints about parking and unfinished facilities when it opened last year.
Construction of the new parking block was delayed by six months, leading to a daily scramble for spaces.
The new extension on the West side of the Brunel building will be built using stone from the demolished former wards.
Martin Warren, North Bristol NHS Trust project manager, said: ““With demolition work now complete the focus is on construction and we are looking forward to seeing the completed building next year.
“We think it is lovely that the stone from the old hospital buildings has been incorporated into the second phase of the Brunel as it continues its history, while also reducing our impact on the environment.”
