Squatters move from one city centre building into another

By Martin Booth  Tuesday May 18, 2021

A group of squatters has been moving some of their possessions out of one building and into another just a few doors down.

Previously given a court order to leave 40A High Street, the group now have until the end of May to leave the former pub.

Squatters are now occupying 45 High Street, with banners unfurled from windows overlooking Castle Park showing residents’ support for Palestine.

Bristol24/7 understands that some people made the journey between the two buildings over the rooftops of neighbouring properties.

40A was once another entrance to The Rummer while 45 was most recently a beauty salon.

‘Criminalising shelter is state violence’ and ‘No eviction is humane’ are among the banners hanging from 40A.

Writing on Instagram on Wednesday, the residents of 40A wrote: “In court today we got given 2 weeks left in our current space. this is usually considered a victory by squatters, but it is worth asking – what the fuck is a fortnight to the council?

“It’s an attempt to save face and to pacify us, it’s barely a concession. Especially for a building that’s been sitting empty for a decade, in a city full of people without houses and free spaces.”
