Stand-off on Park Street between Santas on bikes and pro-Palestine protesters

By Martin Booth  Saturday Dec 2, 2023

An unusual stand-off took place on Park Street on Saturday afternoon as pro-Palestine protesters walking down towards the city centre bumped into a Santas on a Bike ride heading up the hill.

The annual Santas on a Bike ride was raising money for Children’s Hospice South West. The ride had set off from Winterbourne Academy towards Charlton Farm in Wraxall where the charity is based.

The march meanwhile was part of a day of action for Palestine which had started by the water tower on the Downs.

Police officers attempted to resolve the impasse as protesters chanted and bikers revved their engines before eventually, the two groups continued on their routes up and down Park Street.

For the second weekend in a row, the Arnolfini is remaining closed to the public on Saturday and Sunday following their decision to cancel two Bristol Palestine Film Festival eventrs.
