Stokes Croft murder: two men arrested

By Bristol24/7  Tuesday Jan 2, 2018

A makeshift shrine with candles, flowers and bottles of spirits remains outside Blue Mountain on Stokes Croft following the murder of 37-year-old Jama Powell in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police were called to the nightclub at around 3am following reports of an altercation.

Powell, also known as Ruffis, was taken to hospital where he died two hours later from multiple stab wounds.

A 39-year-old man was arrested at the scene while a second man, aged 55, was arrested later. Both remain in police custody.

“The biggest smile, the biggest heart and the biggest loss to us all. RIP Jama. We will miss you forever,” read one tribute among the flowers.

A second handwritten tribute said: “Another life lost to the futility of this world. You touched so many and hurt so few.”

Following police investigations, Blue Mountain reopened at 6pm on Sunday for its New Year’s Eve party.

Detective Superintendent Carolyn Belafonte from Avon & Somerset police said: “A full investigation is being carried out into the circumstances of this tragic incident in which a man has lost his life.

“His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained liaison officers. Our thoughts are with them at what is undoubtedly a difficult time.”

If you witnessed the incident, have footage of it or have any other information which could help the police inquiry, call 101 with the reference 5217295746.
