“Stop dumping on BS5”
Easton residents took their campaign against litter onto the streets on Thursday.
Campaigners for Tidy BS5 met mayor George Ferguson to highlight the problem of fly tipping and rubbish in the area.
Resident Janet Rees said the problem has been getting worse since communal bins were introduced on Stapleton Road and she believes people are coming in from outside the area to use them.
is needed now More than ever
“It’s depressing – it’s so hard to live in an environment like this,” she said. “When you walk down the street you are just looking down constantly worried about what you are going to step in.”
Councillor Margaret Hickman said: “The message is clear – stop dumping on BS5. People come from outside the area to dump their rubbish on Stapleton Road and that must stop. We need support, we need vigilance and we need support from the council to be able to deliver this.”
Stacy Yelland, manager of community action group Up Our Street, said the support for the campaign has been “really motivating” and she wants “the message to be loud and clear – we do not accept our streets being treated like a rubbish dump”.
Tidy BS5 was started by resident Steve Woods, who began tweeting about litter last summer.
The campaign is now supported by a residents task force and community groups across the area and organisers plan to join up with residents in St Paul’s to work together on litter issues.
