Story behind the mystery light show across Bristol harbour
People coming out to applaud NHS and key workers on Thursday night were treated to a mysterious light show.
A vibrant blue laser beamed across the night sky, reflecting down on Bristol harbour and stretching as far as the distinctive spire of St Mary Redcliffe – all to show support for those on the frontline doing vital work while the country is in lockdown.
“I wanted to do something on a massive scale that a lot of people would see – while also maintaining social distance,” explains Johnny Palmer, the founder and managing director of SXS Events.

“There isn’t much event work on right now for my company so we thought about what we could do to support the awesome work of the NHS. A laser beam down Bristol harbour seemed perfect and allowed a great visual expression of the campaign.”
He reveals the laser equipment used on Thursday night was originally purchased for the doing the northern lights effect at the Westonbirt Arboretum Christmas trail.
Johnny adds: “My company aims to support a lot of social and community projects; we are privileged to have the resources that we do and we feel a sense of responsibility to use these for good.”
