By Ellie Pipe  Monday Jan 15, 2018

Police investigating the suspected murder of a man in Knowle West believe his death is linked to an earlier pub disorder in Totterdown.

The 39-year-old, named locally as Nathan Jones, was assaulted in Leinster Avenue, where he was found with serious injuries just after 11.30pm on Friday.

He died at the scene, despite the efforts of officers and paramedics.

Police say a 29-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of murder, remains in custody after officers obtained a warrant to detain him for longer than 24 hours.

A 32-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released under investigation.

Detective Inspector Jim Taylor, from Avon and Somerset’s major crime investigation team, said: “We’d like to speak to anyone who was in the New Found Out pub on Friday night who saw a disorder at about 11.20pm.

“If you saw any part of this incident, or were in the area of the pub and saw anything which could help, please call us.

“Our thoughts are very much with the victim’s family and our sole focus is on fully investigating the events leading up to this tragic incident.

“A forensic post-mortem examination and formal identification procedures have not been completed, so we’re not able to go into any further detail about the cause of death at this time.

“I’d like to thank the local community for the help they’ve given us so far.”

A cordon remained in place on Leinster Avenue over the weekend and police stepped up patrols in the area.

Bristol Rovers released a short statement saying it was shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Nathan Jones, who was the father of a member of the club’s development squad, Connor Jones.

Anyone who can help police with the investigation is asked to call the major crime investigation tea on 101, quoting the reference number 5218008952.
