Swimming lake breaks record on hottest day
Henleaze Swimming Club, founded in 1919, broke their record for visitor numbers on Bristol’s hottest day of 2016 on Tuesday.
More than 1,000 visitors flocked to the freshwater lake to swim, use the diving boards and bask in the glorious sunshine on the grassy banks. The usually cool water, which is fed by a nearby spring, rose to 21 C.
Bristol experienced highs of 32.6C and recorded temperatures only marginally below the national record for this year which was set at 33.4C in Pershore, Worcestershire.
The former quarry in North Bristol has been the home of Henleaze Swimming Club, a registered charity, for 97 years. The club has a sauna and a clubhouse next to the lake. The lake provides a home for freshwater swimming enthusiasts, as well as accommodating anglers, triathletes and divers.
Whilst much of the country woke up to thunderstorms on Wednsday morning, Bristol looks set to enjoy the current heatwave for a little while longer with high temperatures expected to persist throughout the week. Highs of at least 25C are forecast everyday until Sunday.
