Swimming pool to become indoor skate park

By Pamela Parkes  Monday Mar 16, 2015

The former Bishopsworth swimming pool is to be transformed into an indoor skate park and youth centre.

The site on Whitchurch Lane will be leased to Transistions Skate as part of a community assets transfer from Bristol City Council.

The community interest company will lease it for 25 years rent-free, as long as the facility is run for the benefit of the community during that period. All profits will be reinvested back into the project.

The pool will become an indoor skate park and the company also plans to add a café, office space and a meeting room later.

Mayor George Ferguson said the project will give a “new lease of life” to the building and he added that it is “always heartening to see a disused building like this converted and regenerated to provide facilities for the good of the community.”

Work on the site is now underway with the renovated building predicted to open sometime this summer.

Andre Seidel, Director of Transitions Skate said: “We are extremely excited about this project, Canvas SPS are currently on site constructing the indoor, concrete skatepark that will compete with some of the best in the UK and Europe.

“Not only will Bristol be getting the flagship skatepark it deserves, but Bishopsworth will also be getting a facility where young people are welcome to socialise and participate in physical activities.”
