Temple Gate roadworks to start

Work to remodel the Temple Circus roundabout near Temple Meads station starts on Monday and is due to finish in autumn 2018.

Once complete, the Temple Gate will provide a more direct route for traffic travelling through the area and also hopes to bring improved walking and cycling routes.

The scheme includes:

– Removing the Temple Circus roundabout and replacing it with a simplified, signal-controlled junction

– New segregated pedestrian and cycle routes and improvements to existing routes around Temple Gate

– A new single stage pedestrian and cycle crossing from the Brunel Mile to the station

– Better public transport facilities, such as bus stops and shelters and a new MetroBus stop;

– Relocation of bus stops to allow for more space for pedestrians and cyclists

– Creation of bus priority lanes to improve bus journey times and reliability

– Reconfiguration of the Friary and Victoria Street junctions;

– Cattle Market Road will be one way eastbound only for vehicular traffic.

Changes will also be made around the Bath Bridge junction, including:

– Widening the footpath outside Fowlers Motorcycles to accommodate a segregated cycle and pedestrian footway

– Reconstructing the traffic islands at York Road and Clarence Road, making them larger and more cycle and pedestrian friendly, with new and improved toucan crossing facilities

– Widening the footpath outside the Peugeot dealership, allowing room for a shared cycle and pedestrian footway

– Widening the western footway on the approach to Temple Gate from Bath Bridge and the provision of a new toucan crossing of Temple Gate at its southern end

– A new pedestrian crossing from Temple Gate towards Cattle Market Road.
