Temporary closure of Gaol Ferry Bridge
Gaol Ferry Bridge is to be closed for two days while new social distancing measures, including a one-way system, are installed.
The busy footbridge that links Cumberland Road by Wapping Wharf to Coronation Road will be out of action between Thursday, May 28 and Saturday, May 30 while work takes place.
It is among the first of a raft of planned improvements to walking and cycling infrastructure across the city set to help build a “more inclusive, sustainable” future and aid social distancing.

Commenting on the bridge closure, Kye Dudd, the council’s cabinet member for transport, said: “Our travel habits have changed dramatically due to the coronavirus. More people are walking and cycling around our city while, understandably, public transport and taxi use has dropped.
“As part of our major transport improvement plans, we have been looking at specific areas of the city that would benefit from pavement widening and the installation of measures to help social distancing.
“The new social distancing measures on Gaol Ferry Bridge will help residents travel safely to work, while they are enjoying their daily exercise or food shopping and encourage cyclists to slow their speeds across a busy area. I believe the benefits for residents far out-weight the inconvenience and thank you all for your patience while we make these important changes.”
The measures include the installation of a one way system across the footbridge which will be marked by painted arrows, and the addition of extra warning signage.
The measures are designed to keep both pedestrians and cyclists safe from the spread of infection from coronavirus, and keep people moving safely across the well-used bridge.
The Gaol Ferry footbridge will reopen on Saturday 30 May.
