The Old Market charity there for people facing financial hardship

By Ellie Pipe  Monday Oct 7, 2019

Ross was on a downward spiral following a relationship breakdown that left him surviving on food bank vouchers and struggling with poor mental health.

Following a failed attempt to take his own life in October 2016, he sought help from Talking Money, an Old Market-based charity that provides support and advice for people facing financial hardship.

Ross has now successfully completed his master’s in applied ecology and, with continued support from the charity, runs wildlife and conservation education programmes for children on a self-employed basis.

Nick, Ross’ benefits caseworker, said: “His resilience, and the fact that he was able to come to Talking Money and ask for help, meant that Ross was able to get the assistance and support in place to get through this time in his life.”

The charity helps people in a number of ways, from support seeking specialist housing support, to financial help in accessing studying materials.

Talking Money says support with finances can be life-saving. It is one of 45 local causes being given a boost through Bristol Giving Day on Wednesday, October 9.

Bristol Giving Day is organised by the Quartet Community Foundation and is being supported by Bristol24/7.

People can show their support by undertaking the Bridges Challenge and donating £1 for each of the city’s 45 bridges crossed. The target is to raise £45,000 for the 45 organisations and charities.

Find out more about Talking Money by heading to Prince Street Bridge on October 9.

Bristol Giving Day is sponsored by Burges Salmon and PwC, with support by Bristol24/7.
