The Stag and Hounds
Sister venue to the equally good Mother’s Ruin, the S&H is a sprawling, ancient boozer (parts of it built in the late 1400s, if Wikipedia’s to be believed), replete with oak panelling and an estate agent’s wet-dream of original features like the unusual coggy 19th-century iron hand pump and flywheel which remain incongruously installed at the back of the downstairs bar. There’s a tiny window peeping out at the courtyard, which opens onto a secret chamber set between floors, only accessible via a trap-door in what is now a bathroom. Rumoured sightings of Lord Voldemort are unsubstantiated. Creaking up the stairs to the bog, it does feel a lot like the Leaky Cauldron though. Bet it’s haunted, too.
Music-wise, there’s a pleasingly catholic bookings policy, with plenty of multi-band indie nights come the weekend, open mic stuff mid-week and occasional DJ events upstairs, like the enduringly popular Bang! parties.
