These are the winners at the Bristol Diversity Awards 2020

By Martin Booth  Monday Dec 7, 2020

Bristol mayor Marvin Rees won a special recognition award at this year’s Bristol Diversity Awards alongside the five people offered corrective cautions for pulling down the statue of Edward Colston and throwing it in the harbour.

Speaking in June following the statue’s toppling, Rees said that “as an elected politician, obviously I cannot condone the damage…

“But I am of Jamaican heritage and I cannot pretend that I have any real sense of loss for the statue, and I cannot pretend it was anything other than a personal affront to me to have it in the middle of Bristol.”

BCfm chief executive and Diversity Awards co-host Pat Hart called Rees “a fighter, a winner, a statesman who lives next door” as he was revealed as the recipient of the award named in honour of Paul Stephenson who led Bristol’s bus boycott.

Rees and the Colton Five were among almost 30 recipients of the awards given out by Hart and Sherrie Eugene-Hart in a virtual ceremony.
