Thousands of primary school places offered
More than 5,000 families across Bristol will receive offers of primary school places for September 2015 on Thursday.
Bristol City Council said this year 95.6% of children will get a place at one of their three preferred schools – up by 1.6% from 2014.
The number of families who received their first choice of school was also up by 2% and rose to 84% this year. A spokesperson said this figure is likely to rise by September as offers are accepted or rejected.
is needed now More than ever
On-time applications dropped slightly this year to 5,404 down from 5,461 last year.
Brenda Massey, Assistant Mayor for People including Education, said: “We’re delighted that we’ve been able to offer more families one of their preferred schools this year. We’ve done a lot of work in Bristol to make sure we’re meeting the forecast demand for places and we estimate that we’ll have enough primary places until 2020.
“Starting primary school is a key milestone in any child’s life and we do everything we can to support families at this time and ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible.”
Last year Whitehall Primary was the most popular school in the city with more than four applications for every place.
The school, which was rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted in 2013, rejected 86 first choice applications – the highest number of all schools in the city.
An on-going £200m programme to increase supply of school places in Bristol should create 12,000 new places between 2011– 2016.
