Tory councillor says he will boycott Bristol Beacon
One of Bristol’s most senior Tory councillors has vowed “never again to pay one penny towards admittance” to the venue formerly known as the Colston Hall.
Richard Eddy says that the Bristol Beacon has “surrendered to the ‘Forces of the Left'” by changing its name.
The longstanding Bishopsworth councillor called Edward Colston a “great Bristolian” as he criticised institutions across the city for dropping the name of the slave trader.

In a letter to the Bristol Post, Eddy also took a swipe at Green councillor Christine Townsend, who he called a “siren-voice”.
“I do not know for certain whether the Leftie and anarchic incomers to Bristol are motivated by ignorance or malevolence but the outcome of their machinations would be ruinous to our city and transform it into a travesty of the great conurbation it is,” Eddy began his letter.

“The latest siren-voice comes from left-wing Green councillor Christine Townsend who wants the Society of Merchant Venturers to cease its part-ownership of the Downs…
“Does Cllr Townsend believe the Downs would still be a wonderful leisure and natural ‘green lung’ for Bristolians if the city council had the chance of building houses there after World War II?
“Or Labour Mayor Marvin Rees wouldn’t flog it off to his developer friends now if he could grab ownership of the Downs?
“Admittedly, the Merchant Venturers are another traditional Bristol body which has proven itself craven and unnecessarily-apologetic in the face of the persistent but historically-illiterate campaign alleging Bristol’s foundations and benefactors like Edward Colston were uniformly evil and must be stamped out.”

Eddy added: “Even the heart of Bristol’s cultural scene – the Colston Hall – has been rechristened the ‘Bristol Beacon’ and surrendered to the ‘Forces of the Left’.
“Even it it reopens after rebuilding, I am sure I am not the only true Bristolian to vow never again to pay one penny towards admittance.
“Of course, the co-called ‘Bristol Beacon’ perhaps epitomises what modern and increasingly valueless Bristol stands for: it is monstrously mismanaged, hugely expensive and poor value for money… and worships politically correct values. How appropriate for Marvin Rees’ Bristol!”
