New square for Frogmore Street
A new pedestrian-friendly square could be created around the Hatchet Inn in a bid to breathe some life into Frogmore Street.
The city council have put forward plans to to create a “shared space” for pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles which they argue would slow down traffic and attract more visitors to the area around the 1606 pub.
Under the plans, the council is also looking to close Denmark Avenue to traffic and upgrade the crossings between Trenchard Street car park and the Colston Hall.
is needed now More than ever
The changes would cost up to almost £800,000 and would be paid for using Section 106 money, a tax on developers such as Unite which has recently built student halls on the site of the former ice rink above the 02 Academy.
Launching the consultation, councillor Helen Holland, cabinet member for place at Bristol City Council, said: “The street and surrounding area are set in one of the most historic parts of the city but we just don’t make the most if it, while it is difficult to navigate with busy traffic and the current layout.”
She added: “Trenchard Street is surrounded by important venues, and connecting streets so we really want to enhance walking routes to and through the centre.”
