‘Truly devastating’ break-in at record shop
A much-loved record shop has fallen victim to a “truly devastating” break-in.
Black City Records was broken into on Wednesday night, with a thief stealing cash, charity collection tins and smashing the computer and till systems.
Cameras were also ripped from the walls and glass from the front door smashed with an iron bar.
is needed now More than ever
Owners were alerted to the incident via CCTV where they noticed a figure “searching through every nook and cranny in the shop”.

Posting on social media, owner of the shop on Trenchard Street David Savage said: “We are totally floored by it all and typing this this morning is proving more emotionally difficult than I’d had ever imagined!
“We’ve worked tirelessly for the better part of over two years on the tiniest of margins to get the shop to where it’s at and to see this happen in a matter of minutes is truly devastating.”
Friends of the shop, which sits in what was formerly the Bristol Porridge Project, are now appealing for donations “to show support and love” to the business which sells vinyl, CDs, cassettes, t-shirts, merchandise, fanzines, magazines and books from major labels through to independent bands.
John Ashby of heavy metal pub the Gryphon Bristol, who helped out after the incident, wrote: “Whilst the damage can be fixed; the emotional impact will be long-lasting.”

Black City Records added: “Needless to say we will be shut for a while, but we will keep you up to speed with everything that happens.
“Fortunately, we do have some good footage of the complete oxygen thief that decided to tear our little metal haven apart and I would ask that you share this in the hope that someone recognises them, and something may happen.”
David, who has been a lifelong record collector and grew up on the London metal scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s, started Black City Records in 2021 after growing frustrated with the lack of dedicated heavy metal music stores in Bristol.
Police ask if anyone has any information, including any dashcam footage of Trenchard Street at about 11.25pm, to call 101 and give the reference 5222216844.
