Turbo Island fenced off

By Martin Booth  Monday Oct 24, 2022

A notorious corner of Stokes Croft has been fenced off, with people already mourning its demise.

Fencing now surrounds the patch of empty land known as Turbo Island where Stokes Croft meets Jamaica Street.

Landowner Wildstone has previously said it is planning to pave the area which they say has become a “focus for antisocial behaviour”.

Turbo Island got its nickname thanks to a brand of super-strength cider.

In a tweet on Monday morning, Marvin Rees said that a team from Bristol Waste had cleaned up Turbo Island before it was fenced off for works.

Rees said: “We welcome the landowner taking action to prevent further anti-social behaviour at this hotspot.”

At 11am, three workers in yellow hi-vis jackets were on Turbo Island, with one sat inside a small digger.

On Reddit, users are asking: ‘Is this farewell to Turbo Island?’

“At last. Stokes Croft has deserved better for a long time,” wrote Leftofdenial.

“There will just be a sense of nostalgia about it now,” said NarwhalsAreSick.

Robhaswell added: “I love a bit of crazy local character, seeing the posts on the instagram and joking about the lawlessness of this patch.

“However, I’m a healthy young male who isn’t worried by the local bag-heads. My wife, however, doesn’t feel safe walking through this area at night, and that’s unacceptable. Vulnerable people should be able to feel like they can walk along a major high street without fear of a run-in with the wild antics that go on here at night. Much like the Bear Pit, which I was sad to see whitewashed, it’s better that these places are safe for all people.”
