Twenty-storey development proposed for site opposite Temple Meads

By Betty Woolerton  Friday May 13, 2022

A “landmark” 20-storey building will be the centrepiece of a new development opposite Temple Meads.

The latest plans for the site that used to be a Robins and Day Peugeot dealership have been revealed – and will include 400 flats, new shops and commercial units.

They are part of the Temple Quarter regeneration project where developers Dandara are aiming to create “a striking new gateway to the city” on a parcel of land either side of Chatterton Road.

Their build-to-rent proposal includes 400 new dwellings that will be a mixture of one, two and three bedrooms.

Dandara did not state how many homes will be classified as ‘affordable’.

The housebuilder said that the development, including a 20-story block, is “appropriately sensitive” to key views and impact on nearby heritage sites.

A spokesperson from Dandara said: “It is a prominent location that warrants a landmark building to identify the gateway to the city centre.

“The scheme is conceived as a set of buildings of different heights, detail and materials that cluster around a terraced landscaped courtyard.

“This approach provides a considered silhouette that frames the long views of key heritage assets and also responds in scale to its different neighbours.”

Dandara is the city council’s ‘development partner’ at one of the five Bedminster Green sites.

Residents of the new development will have access to a shared gym, communal lounges, and a garden terrace and rooftop spaces.

The ground floor of the development would not be residential but commercial spaces open to everyone, as well as social and workspaces for residents.

The existing building line on Temple Gate and Clarence Road will be “pulled back, to allow space for improvements to the public realm including widened pavements (at least two metres wide) around the whole proposal, space for street tree planting and a segregated cycle lane”.

A public exhibition of the plans will be on display at the Engine Shed on Tuesday, May 17.
