Two employers revealed not to pay min wage

By Sam Gregory-Manning  Thursday Feb 4, 2016

Two Bristol employers who failed to pay their workers the National Minimum Wage have been named and shamed.

Hartcliffe newsagents Fulford News and bar chain Loungers were both listed on the new National Minimum Wage offenders name and shame scheme released on Friday by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills.

But Loungers claim that an administration error caused Bonzo Lounge in Keynsham to be on the list of 92 businesses across the UK investigated by HM Revenue & Customs for failing to pay £459.88 to one employee.

A Loungers spokesman said: “This case relates to one underpayment which arose due to an administrative error. We subsequently apologised to the employee and corrected the underpayment accordingly.”

Fulford News Ltd, trading as K P News & Fulford Road Post Office, failed to pay one employee £913.14. Bristol 24/7 contacted Fulford News but they declined to comment.

The National Minimum Wage rose to £6.70 in October 2015 and employers are instructed to be aware of the different rates depending on the circumstances of their workers.

Business Minister Nick Boles said: “There is no excuse for not paying staff the wages they’re entitled to. Our policy of naming and shaming employers who ignore the law means there are consequences for their reputation as well as their wallets.

“In April we will introduce a new National Living Wage which will mean a pay rise of over £900-a-year for someone working full time on the minimum wage and we will enforce this equally robustly.”
