Two Bristol NHS trusts to move to joint leadership model
Two major NHS Trusts in Bristol have announced the decision to work under joint leadership from 2024 in an “important step” to establish a Group model within the next two years.
North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundational Trust (UHBW) will launch their Joint Clinical Strategy at the start of 2024, outlining the future direction of clinical services, with the aim to appoint a joint chair and joint chief executive shortly following this.
A spokesperson for UHBV said the decision “demonstrates clear commitment” for formal partnership and collaboration between the two trusts, to “address shared challenges while still retaining the flexibility to serve their unique communities”.
The move is the first step towards a group model of Bristol’s two NHS trusts
CEO of UHBW, Eugine Yafele, said: “This is absolutely the right thing to do for our patients, our staff and our communities.
“Working together in this way will unlock significant opportunities to reduce health inequalities, improve access to services, reduce waiting times and improve experiences for our staff and those who need our care.”
The decision adheres to the Health and Care Act 2022, which instructs providers to collaborate.
Maria Kane, CEO of NBT said the decision will enable the hospital group to “attract and retain the very best staff by offering them access to truly ‘cross city’ and wider system opportunities”.
The NBT and UHBW have already collaborated as acute providers, sharing decision-making across the two trusts.
