Update: Filton Avenue cordon lifted

By Ellie Pipe  Friday Jul 27, 2018

Residents who were evacuated from their homes while bomb disposal experts searched a property on Filton Avenue have been allowed to return.

Police confirmed the cordon, which had been in place for much of the week after “suspicious items” were found at the house, was lifted on Thursday evening. It had been feared it would have to remain into the weekend.

Matthew Glynn, 37, appeared before Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday charged with possessing or controlling explosives with intent to endanger life or injure property. He remains in custody until his next hearing.

Bomb disposal experts at the scene

Officers remain at the property on Filton Avenue, with screens erected outside it, while they carry out further enquiries.

Inspector Rob Cheeseman said: “This has been an unusual incident and I’d like to thank all those affected by it for their patience and support.

“From the outset our priority has always been their safety and together with our partners we have worked as hard as we could to get them back in their homes as soon as possible.

“We did think the search could take several days so we’re pleased to be able to reduce the cordon this evening, meaning residents won’t have to spend another night away from their beds.

“Our investigation into the incident continues and officers will remain at the property tomorrow.

“If anyone continues to have any concerns about the incident I’d encourage them to contact their neighbourhood team via 101 and they will be happy to assist in any way they can.”
