Detectives from Avon & Somerset Constabulary’s major crime investigation team have launched a murder inquiry following the attack.

They are linking it to a second assault that took place less than two hours later on the same day on nearby Downend Road.

A 48-year-old man sustained serious injuries after being attacked by a number of people in the second incident, which happened at about 8.40pm. He remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Senior investigating officer, detective inspector Mike Buck, said: “We’re continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ronald’s death and our thoughts are very much with his family at this distressing time.

“They are being fully supported by a trained family liaison officer who will keep them updated on the progress of our investigation.

“We understand this is also a concerning time for the local community and anyone with any concerns is encouraged to contact their local neighbourhood team.”

Anyone with information about either incident is asked to contact police via the non-emergency number 101, providing the call handler with the reference 5218226466.
