Watch skillful pilots battle crosswinds to land at Bristol Airport

By Martin Booth  Sunday Oct 14, 2018

With winds blowing at more than 50mph and constantly changing direction, Storm Callum seriously tested the skills of pilots arriving into Bristol Airport.

This video was taken on Friday by a self-proclaimed aviation geek known on YouTube as Mr Aviation Guy, who headed to the airport between 9.50am and 1.30pm.

“It was exciting to watch it all unfold as the winds kept increasing while I was there,” Mr Aviation Guy told Bristol24/7.

More than a dozen planes were diverted during the day after being unable to land at Bristol. Most planes were sent to Birmingham, a couple to Cardiff and another to Gatwick. Numerous flights were also cancelled.

“Those that landed did a fantastic job and it just shows how professional they are as well as how important the rigorous training is,” added Mr Aviation Guy, whose videos have been watched more than 5.5m times on YouTube.

“It is fascinating to see how powerful Mother Nature really is and I think watching planes land in strong winds is a perfect example of that; these winds are blowing these aircraft around like it’s nothing, even though they weigh tens of thousands of tonnes.”
