Video: The future of Brislington Meadows
People have given their reaction to proposals to build 300 new homes on a local wildlife haven.
Homes England recently renewed its commitment to press ahead with plans to develop Brislingon Meadows, which it bought for £15m.
This comes despite an announcement from mayor Marvin Rees less than three weeks before polling day in May’s local elections, when he joined Labour colleagues in a pledge to protect the site, saying it was too ecologically precious to be built on.
is needed now More than ever
The government’s housing agency has since outlined plans to deliver a “nature-led masterplan”, providing “carbon-friendly housing” that includes 30 per cent affordable homes.
Rees has now said that Homes England’s plans are “disappointing” but that he cannot rule on planning applications as mayor.
He has drawn criticism from within his own party, with Tim Rippington, a Labour councillor for Brislington East saying the mayor has shown “a total abdication of duty”.
