Views wanted on Temple Circus transformation
Bristol City Council is planning a major public consultation by the end of the year into works that will transform one of the busiest road junctions in the city.
An £11m plan to rip up the Temple Circus roundabout and redesign it, which transport chiefs hope will simplify the road layout next to Temple Meads and create an “improved gateway” to Bristol.
The plans are part of a £21m project to revamp transport links with the Temple Quarter Enterprise Zone.
is needed now More than ever
A report has just been passed which outlines which elements of the proposed scheme could be delivered using the council’s existing legal powers and which would require planning permission.
This is the first step in the planning process and, following a consultation with the public in December and January, could lead to work starting at the end of 2015 and be completed by the end of 2016.
Among the key elements of the plan are:
– Removal of the roundabout to allow for a straight passage from Temple Meads to Temple Way;
– Five metre-wide combined pedestrian and cycle path towards the station.
Meanwhile, the derelict Grosvenor Hotel and The George and Railway Hotel will be retained as part of the plans.
A council spokesman said: “There is no material impact on the two buildings to the south of Temple Circus. The reconfiguration of the highway provides a viable regeneration opportunity including the two existing buildings.”
She added a “full scheme network management plan will be produced to ensure the impact on the road network will be minimised during construction”, while insisting the work would be coordinated with other nearby road and infrastructure works.
Details on the consultation are due to be released in the next few weeks. See Bristol24/7 for details.
