Bristol speed cameras switched back on

By Pamela Parkes  Wednesday Feb 11, 2015

Police are starting to switch speed cameras back on across Avon and Somerset.

The first one to be re-activated today is on the A4 at Bath Road Hill in Saltford.

The cameras were turned off in 2011 after government funding was withdrawn but, as part of a new road safety initiative, 29 static cameras will brought back into use across the region.

Avon and Somerset Police’s Road Safety Superintendent Richard Corrigan said: “Our message is loud and clear – drivers should assume that all roadside fixed cameras are now operational and to drive accordingly.

“Drivers who choose to exceed the speed limit can expect to be caught and prosecuted if you exceed the legal speed limit.”

The cameras will be switched back on in a phased programme over the coming weeks and months. Police say the revenue raised will be used to fund the camera maintenance and enforcement.

Supt Corrigan said the switch on would be “cost neutral” as there was a “camera infrastructure worth more than two million pounds lying dormant on the roadsides in the force area”.

Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said the reactivation would be a “positive move” and she said many people have been “pressing to have the cameras in their communities turned back on as soon as possible. I’m pleased that I can now tell them they are back on”.
