WECA criticised for concept design competition that will not pay winning designer
The West of England is to get its own logo in the spirit of the famous London Underground roundel that will be used across buses, trains, e-scooters and other public transport.
Metro mayor Dan Norris is looking for “local people’s artistic talent” to help design it but the logo competition has been roundly criticised for not paying designers for their work.
The winning designer will receive no money, with the competition’s terms and conditions also revealing that entrants give WECA all the intellectual property rights to their designs.

Designer Sam Jolly tweeted: “Disrespectful to the region’s creative community. If you believe the words in your own article, and want ‘something really special’ then pay for it.”
Architect Toon Dreessen added: “How about valuing the work of graphic designers and holding a (paid) design competition, selecting the best design and paying the winner for a logo that will be seen by thousands/millions of people, indelibly creating a lasting cultural identity?”
Emma Edwards, Green Party councillor for Bishopston & Ashley Down, said it was “disappointing that a Labour mayor wouldn’t recognise that people should be paid for their labour. Creative work is work and deserves to be paid for properly.”
WECA have been asked for a comment.
