Date set for Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze by-election

By Ellie Pipe  Tuesday Apr 24, 2018

Voters in Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze will be returning to the polls next month.

This follows the recent resignation of Lib Dem councillor Clare Campion-Smith, who stood down in early April due to health reasons.

Bristol City Council has confirmed the by-election will take place on Thursday, May 24, and polling stations across the ward will be open from 7am to 10pm.

Anyone wishing to stand in the by-election has until Friday, April 27 to register.

Key dates for voters:

–       Last date to register to vote in the by-election: May 8.

–       Last date to return postal vote applications:  5pm on May 9.

–       Last date to return proxy vote applications: 5pm on May 16.

Votes will be counted through the night after polling closes on Thursday, May 24.

Clare Campion-Smith

Announcing her resignation earlier this month, Campion-Smith, who served on the council for 12 years, said: “It is with some sadness that I’ve handed in my resignation as a councillor. I have been diagnosed with a lung condition which is not life-threatening, but I wish to have more personal time to keep myself well. The last two winters have been a bit of a struggle.

“As a party, we have always been committed, locally and nationally, to creating a more sustainable city and country. I was fully behind the second bid and successful bid to become European Green Capital and felt doubly delighted when my year as lord mayor covered half of the Green Capital year.

“At the local level, it gives me great pleasure to see the changes to Old Quarry Park and see Fallodon Way Playpark full of children and know that we achieved that working with the Henleaze Society.

“I have been proud to represent Henleaze and Westbury, sad to step down but recognise that now is the right time.

“Thank you to the electors for twelve privileged years (very occasionally traumatic!) in which to serve Bristol.”
